There are 7 main steps you need to take to start a blog. If you follow this guide exactly, your own blog will be set in 60 minutes or less from scratch
How to start a Blog in 7 Steps
i. Discover your niche and decide what to blog about.
ii. Choose a blogging platform
iii. Select the name and domain of your blog.
iv. Find a good hosting provider.
v.Choose a theme and design your blog.
vi. Publish and Promote your posts
vii. Monetize your Blog
The reason I divided the blogging journey into 7 categories because I want to make it understandable to everyone. The problems which beginners faces, I will try to resolve them step by step so that anyone can create a blog of its own.
Step 1. Discover your niche and decide what to blog about.
Firstly, a beginner struggles with the meaning of the word “Niche”
What does a Niche mean?
Let me define you the term Niche.
“A niche is more than just a like subject or topic. It’s your approach, the audience you want to follow, and the way you talk to them and position yourself as an expert.”
For example, I have good knowledge of Online Earning, Digital Marketing and Technology. I love to explore them and I can talk about these topics for hours sharing my knowledge. Now many new bloggers do make some mistake here, they choose either by following the footsteps of some big bloggers or they choose their passionate niche.
Choosing your passion as your niche is good but at some point as passion fades your interest also fades away slowly.
So choose a niche you are best about, ask yourself what is the best in you that you can share with the world and it makes you best from others?
If you good in fashion, then write about it, if you can help others in saving money or making tips, you can share your experiences and help others too to earn money. likewise, you can get niches upon health, gadgets, politics, short stories, resolving software and hardware problems with your words, your traveling experiences about a certain part of the world, its historical, geographical importance.
I have summed up 7 popular niches that are widely accepted and making money widely
One big mistake which we all generally do, summing up all niches in one. Like you create a blog and you add up different niches in one, try to avoid it. It will affect your Google ranking when you try to get your blog to rank on certain keywords.
Remember, consistency is the key when you start a blog. Therefore, choosing a niche that you can keep up with and remain excited about is essential for a successful blog to develop.
Step 2. Choose a blogging platform
The next step is setting up the platform upon which you will blog set up will take place. The most popular is the WordPress platform and nearly 80 % of blogs choose this platform.
It’s the choice of all successful bloggers because:-
i. It is by far one of the world’s largest blogging platforms, with countless plugins and add-ons and almost endless designs and layouts.
ii. It is easy to set up and easy to use.
iii.Thousands of free themes with regular updates.
iv.Lightweight for quick upload, which is essential for ranking in Google also for indexing too.
There are alternatives to WordPress too, some of the alternatives are
How to start a blog on WordPress
A newbie blogger can get confused with WordPress versions as it has two variants
It has the following features like a completely customizable design, unlimited plugin options and no branding. Total control over your own monetization efforts, Powerful SEO features Start or add an eCommerce store or affiliate site
The following features one can get by using this platform like it is free to use, doesn’t let you choose a custom domain name, has very limited monetization options, doesn’t let you upload plugins, has limited theme support so that you are stuck with very basic designs.
iii. Select the name and domain of your blog
You must decide whether to pay for your blog or pick up a free blog.
You’re a real owner of your blog with a self- hosted blog on your own domain name. It depends upon you to name whatever you want, like. ” YourDecidedName.com” or ” YourDecidedNameBlog.com.” You can finish it with a.com,.in,.co.in,.net,.org or almost any other web suffix.
Once you have set your blogging platform now choose a unique name that can make you stand from others. Before choosing a name keep in mind what you will be providing to your readers and upon which niche you will be writing. Try to choose your domain name within 15 words, but the best is the domain with 5-6 words limit and easy to spell. You can check it from Godaddy.com, Namecheap to see if the domains are available so that you can buy them. But you need to renew it depending upon the plans you are choosing to purchase your domain name.
Now if you choose a platform which is self-hosting like WordPress, Tumblr and Blogger all offer free blogs for everyone, there you can’t get your individual name, actually in simple words it’s not your platform where you are hosting you are just renting it for your use and it won’t have anything that is completely yours. And the domain name will be a bit like this “Yourblog.wordpress.com”, “Yourblog.blogspot.com” etc so the blog address looks odd and increases in length too.
Anyways for a fresher who is extremely new, I will refer them to start from free platforms just to know its functionality or its useless or you can use it for web 2.0 submission(SEO trick) for ranking your blog in google.
iv. Find a good hosting provider
The question can come to mind why do we need to host? Let me it clear to you, you need a ” host” to make your website accessible to others on the Internet. The host keeps all your website files safe, secure and ensures that people can access your website by clicking on a link or entering your URL.
Check the Qualities that a Hosting provider should have Good Speed (99.99 Uptime), Features (for one-click setup), Security ( from attack) and 24×7 Support system.
There are tons of Hosting providers that provide hosting for your blog.I use Hostgator which gives 99.99 per cent uptime and good support. Hostgator offers an incredibly simple 1-click WordPress install that makes it easy to start a self- hosted WordPress blog. It also has a free domain name( if your URL is available) and offers 24/7 support to answer all your questions and help you solve problems.
v.Choose a theme and design your blog
Log in to your WordPress account
There are so many themes to check out that it’s easy to get rid of those that look great, but may not be functionally great. Remember, a design isn’t just about how your blog looks. It’s about how it works.
Get your blog look exactly how you want it to be. You can go to Appearance > Themes and install a free WordPress theme to choose a new theme or you can purchase Premium Themes too to make your blog beautiful.
But before choosing a theme paid or free look at these factors that are essential for ranking factors in Google or indexing of your blog posts
- Choose Simple Theme
- Responsive (should be mobile friendly)
- Seo friendly
- Supported plugins
- Can work at different browsers
- Check its ratings and reviews
- Support (available for premium themes)
Often many people feel difficulty to design the themes, you can get services for designing your themes from platforms like Upwork, Fiverr where you can rent designers to do the design for you at nominal prices.
Add the basic requirements to your blog themes like essential plugins, make pages (for Adsense apply), categories, menu and sections.
vi. Publish and Promote your posts
Once you have written your posts according to your niche, do the useful On page and Off page Seo.
Now its time to drive traffic to your blog so that readers can know about you and your blog. So the best promotion platform to drive traffic is Social Media Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Reddit, Instagram. etc The right platform for you and your audience is the right one.
One of the best things about starting a blog is that bloggers enjoy helping each other out. And Guest Posting on other relevant blogs is one of the best ways to reach an already established audience. So do collaborations with other bloggers of the same niche, do guest posting, participate in Forums.
Follow Top Bloggers, learn from them, they do share their success stories, participate in events. Join their groups do Q & A, contribute, learn, share this is what basic of Blogging.
